Red Panax Ginseng

What Is Red Panax Ginseng?

Panax ginseng is a plant which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for years for a wide range of preventative purposes. Panax ginseng has been shown to be effective for mood, cognition, and immunity. The term ‘Panax’ is derived from the Greek language meaning ‘all-healing.’ The term ‘Ginseng’ comes from the Chinese word renshen, which means ‘man root.’ Thus, Panax Ginseng translates to ‘All-healing man root.’

American Ginseng and Panax Ginseng are similar plants, yet they have their differences. They do have a lot of the same active compounds, yet in differing amounts which makes their effects different.

How Does Red Panax Ginseng Work??

Panax ginseng contains a variety of active compounds called ‘Ginsenosides,’ which are steroid-like saponins. Other compounds found in ginseng are phytochemicals, such as polyynes and some microRNAs. Many of the cognitive benefits of ginseng may be due to the anti-fatigue effects of these ginsenosides. There may be other unknown mechanisms by which ginseng improves cognitive function, yet these are still being studied.

But What Are The Benefits Of Me Taking Red Panax Ginseng??

There is strong evidence that ginseng can reduce blood glucose. Studies also show strong evidence that ginseng can increase cognition even when it is taken acutely. This could be due to its anti-fatigue effects. Furthermore, red panax ginseng can increase subjective well being. Studies show improvements in happiness and well being in healthy individuals during times of acute mental stress. There is also some evidence that ginseng can show a minor decrease in reaction times.

Where Is The Proof For All These Great Benefits?!

One study analyzing ginseng saw that it improved cognition significantly, and it also decreased blood glucose. The effects were better at 200mg rather than at 400mg dosed daily [1]. In another study, ginseng was seen to decrease blood glucose by 7-12% after 60-120 mins of ingestion [2]. Ginseng has been shown to improve accuracy and to produce a dose dependent improvement in the speed of response in another study. The results were seen best at 200 mg of ginseng along with 120 mg of ginkgo biloba [3]. Another study showed ginseng to improve the speed of performing memory tasks as well as the accuracy of attentional tasks [4].
